A double headed drum. The drum shell has an asymmetrical barrel shape. The instrument is placed horizontally on the floor or suspended from the player's shoulders by means of a cord and is struck with both hands. The right, smaller drumhead gives off a high-pitched, metallic sound, while the left side produces a deeper bass sound. Used to accompany religious songs such as kirtan, as well as many other folk songs.
